Merc occurs as multi-user domain ( MUD ) engine derived from earliest computer software like DikuMUD and "Copper MUD." Created in the early 1990s, it served as a basis for several late MUDs.

Merc was created by Michael Chastain ("Furey"), Michael Quan ("Kahn"), & Mitchell Tse ("Hatchet") at a University of California, Berkeley and first freed in December 18, 1992.
